Spinning yarn is a traditional method of creating yarn from natural fibres from either animals or plants. This process had drawn me in like a rabbit down a hole and I fell in love with the fibre arts more and more. I will be selling some yarns here and there and adding pictures to my ever growing portfolio folio.
The wheel I use is an Ashford kiwi 3, I love working with different textures and fibres to experiment and create sensation work. I work a lot with colours and natural fibres such as; Blue Face Leicester, Alpaca Suri, Corriedale and traditional British wool.
Locally I have a lot of people that keep alpacas so I have managed to gather a few different fleece’s that I have been having fun spinning. I have been working with a brown Suri Alpaca fleece and a White Huacaya and the difference between the fibres has been really interesting and a great focus for my work. As the Suri alpaca is more teddy fluffy type fibre and the Huacaya is more crimped and dense but also very fluffy so this was interesting to take into consideration during the carding process.
Once I’ve carded all my fibres I then spin then and then get two of the singles I have spun and ply them together to create a balanced yarn, then to set the twist I wash it and soak it in water with a wool friendly soap and hang it to dry.
